The Centre for the Study of Nigerian Languages, Bayero University, Kano, was established during the 1969/70 session to continue the work of the “Hausa Language Board” of the defunct Northern Region of Nigeria. The original aim was to promote the use of Hausa, Fulfulde and Kanuri Languages, Literature and Cultures.

The Centre also convenes national and international Conferences, Seminars, and Workshops on Nigerian Languages, Translation, and Folklore, while preserving traditional manuscripts, folk artifacts, crafts, and traditional music. It also provides library and archival services to researchers through its rich collections. More importantly, the Centre for Research in Nigerian Languages, Translation and Folklore (CRNLT&F) is committed to promoting linguistic diversity and effective communication across Nigeria’s multilingual society. The Centre specializes in translation and interpretation of all Nigerian languages, ranging from English to Hausa, Igbo, Yoruba, Fulfulde, Kanuri, and many other indigenous languages.

With a team of highly skilled and reputable translators, the Centre has successfully executed numerous translation and interpretation projects both locally and internationally. Our translation services cover academic, legal, literary, cultural, and media-based works—bridging the communication gap among diverse linguistic communities.

Beyond translation, the Centre also plays a vital role in capacity building. It has trained media practitioners, court interpreters, and professional translators across Nigeria, thereby strengthening the nation’s multilingual communication and cultural preservation efforts.

At CRNLT&F, we believe that language is the bridge to understanding and development, and our work continues to support research, documentation, and translation that foster national unity and global recognition of Nigerian languages.

 In April 2014, the Centre’s name changed from Centre for the Study in Nigerian Languages (CSNL) to “Centre for Research in Nigerian Languages and Folklore” (CRNL&F), and in 2017 it was renamed “Centre for Research in Nigerian Languages, Translation and Folklore” (CRNLT&F).

Today, the Centre is managed by the Director and two Deputies, supported by an Emeritus Professor and six administrative staff, including a secretary, librarian, four junior staff, and a driver.
